A group of seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist group face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or are in custody.”
